I've been wondering about this for quite some time. Is it morally wrong to adopt an embryo that has been created and frozen? It seems to me that as he is already a human person with a soul(unless his being created by science nullifies that?) he deserves a chance at life no matter the way in which he was conceived. In my mind it seems just as wrong as creating him for IVF in the first place to destroy(for whatever reason:stem cell research or discarding "unused" fetuses) or even to just let sit. It seems that not to give these babies a chance to live is a good way to undermine the argument that new life should not be created in this way in the first place. It seems as though one is saying that the fetus is not really human at the point of conception? Just curious, Sarai

Sarai, The Catholic stance, as I understand it, is that it is wrong to separate contraception from the marital embrace, which bars a person from using IVF to implant a frozen embryo. I do not know of any alternatives that are currently acceptable to the church. This might help: http://www.catholic.com/thisrock/2002/0201fea5.asp

This is a very delicate question indeed - since it appears that you would be balancing two chief concerns: one is the concern for the life of the individual human embryo and the other is the need to avoid any participation in or appearance of condoning an evil act (and an evil industry).
My take is that a person CAN volunteer to adopt an emryo and receive it through implantation so long as the following conditions would be met:
1. It is being done solely to save a human life that would otherwise be destroyed.
2. Multiple implantations are not invloved, unless there is the intention to carry all to term (no selective abortion).
3. It is made clear that you are doing this to save the life of the human embryo, and not to condone or support this immoral industry, so there is no risk of scandal.
I'm open to being proven wrong on this, but those are just my initial thoughts.
