Shalom,

According to www.infoplease.com [infoplease.com] Hajji is 1. a Muslim who has gone on a pilgrimage to Mecca.
2. a Christian from Greece, Armenia, or any country of the Near East, who has visited the Holy Sepulcher at Jerusalem. Also, hadji, haji.

Can somebody tell me about the Hajji in Orthodoxy (the requirements of becoming a Hajji etc.)? Is it an Arabic word? I've read that Hajji is a term for a pilgrim man, and Hajjina is pilgrim woman.

Thanx.

Anyone who has gone to the Holy Land on pilgrimage is a Hadji. (Arabic word). Thus, in Greek, many surnames start with 'Hadji'. For instance, a friend's last name comes to mind: 'Hadjipetros'.

This prefix to one's surname was a sign of pride at a time when making a pilgrimage was not as easy endeavour as it is now.

In Christ,
Alice

Are there certain act/ritual to do or certain places to visit in Holy Land (including Holy Sepulcher) in order to become a Hadji?

Thanx...

Dear Simeon,

I believe that you have to be baptized in the Jordan River.

Is it OK to receive the second baptism in Jordan river, since I'm a Catholic? Who will perform the baptism?
I've read the Hadji term is a Muslim influence. Is it true?

Thanx.

Most baptisms in the Jordan are second baptisms, atleast for RC and Orthodox. I see no problem. Please talk to your priest about it.

A 'hadj' is the Muslim term for one who has gone on pilgrimage to Mecca.

The Greeks were under Ottoman rule for 400 years, so we have adopted alot of Turkish words.

God bless!
In Christ's love,
Alice

Dear Friends,

Up here, our Greeks spell it "Hatzi" as in "Hatzipaulou" etc.

One need not, as I understand it, wash in the river Jordan, but this can be done. One would have to visit the holy Shrines and sites in Jerusalem.

I did this with my wife way back when and we obtained a certificate declaring us to be "Pilgrims of Jerusalem."

Pilgrims to Rome and other famous sites could, upon returning, take the name of the city as their new surname ie. "Roman" "Cantuar" etc.

My relatives were all pilgrims to Rome since the 14th century and this is why my surname is such.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, as I understand it, still takes the name "Cantuar."
