Hello friends! Just a quick question regarding receiving the Eucharist:
I have noticed that some in our congragation walk up to receive Communion with their arms folded over their chests, while others just clasp their hands in front. Then, once you approach Father, you hold a little "napkin" under your chin with one hand while you receive.
I was wondering, which is the correct way to walk forward to receive? Does it matter? Thanks!

Hi Donna,
I don't know if there is a correct way but at my Orthodox parish (OCA), people fold their arms over their chest as they walk up to receive the Holy Mysteries. Then after receiving, we kiss the Chalice but this is more a Russian custom then a Rusyn one.

I have always been taught that it is most proper to keep your hands folded on your chest, right over left. Symbolically, it is an outward sign of our humility and submission to God. Practically, it keeps our hands out of the way. It is also quite proper to hold the edge of the communion cloth under one's mouth, especially if there are no assistants holding it already.

Also you can say your baptismal name to the priest or deacon at the chalice and he will say "The handmaid of the Lord Donna receives..."
