Hi there. I was curious to know if anyone can comment on the fidelity of translation of the Philip Schaff edition of the Early Church Fathers set published by Eerdmans/Hendrickson. Schaff was a protestant apologist of sorts, so I am wondering whether that particular series can be trusted for its translation, or if the translations might be "fudged" toward a more protestant ecclesiology and theological interpretation?

I didn't have any problem with it, I've seen it recommended by others with that standard caveat, which you already understand.

For around $200.00 the set is hard to refuse, and it looks pretty good in the bookcase! wink

While it is not an all-encompassing set, it is still quite a lot, and at that price it's like buying the Fathers by the pound.

What little I have been able to dig into it, I found no overt bias. The translation is about 100 years old now so the English probably could use a little updating, but it is dignified.

I read a little about Schaff, and while studying the Fathers did not convert him to Orthodoxy or Catholicism, it does seem to have influenced his own thinking about sacramental Christianity. Therefore I think the Patristic literature was more of an influence on him than the other way around.

I bought the entire Eerdmans' patristics series while in high school in 1974, when I knew little Greek. They are on long term loan to a friend who is now a priest, and I miss them, and am thinking of buying a second set.

A few footnotes are biased towards Protestantism, but I'm unaware of any problems with the actual text, and I know many Orthodox scholars who use them and have compared the samples of the translations to the original.

They are a great deal money-wise, and I recommend them!

Happily, that edition of the Fathers is now available on CD-ROM. Will someone please do the Sources Chretiennes series in English?
