Some recent words from Abbot Joseph of Holy Transfiguration Monastery (Mt. Tabor): Some time ago, I was suddenly made aware, during the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, of the beautiful interplay of the priest's silent prayers and the choir's hymns during the anaphora, when the consecratory prayers are prayed. The reverent worship of the people rose like incense as the priests fervently invoked the Most High to make present the awesome Sacrifice. Holiness was like the air we breathed. Silent prayer and chanted praises became as one heartbeat, one cry of longing for the Coming One to come. It all started when the choir began softly to sing: "Holy, holy, holy...." Fr. Frank says very often, as the people are singing - and everyone sings in our Church - he feels their prayers coming forth in song. It is as though it is a tidal wave of sorts pressing him in against the Holy Altar asking the Holy Spirit to make Jesus present to us & among us again. He says when it is occuring it is kind of mind bogling(my expression, not his), so very powerful.
I think about that occassionaly and the words prayer - 'always eaten, but never consumed' - wow, since Jesus prayed over the bread that became his Body, and the grape that became his Blood - always eaten but never comsumed.
Brothers and Sisters we partake each time, each one of us receives what Christ held in his hand!
