I would like to ask a question I have wondered about for a while. I have viewed some of the beautiful icons at various Coptic sites. I understand the history of the Copts (somewhat) - Council of Chalcedon, monophysite controversy, etc. I know there are on going dialogues between the Western and Eastern Churches and the Coptic Church. Some of particular interest are at www.theotokos.org [theotokos.org] . Can these icons be used within a Byzantine Catholic/Eastern Orthodox Church? Can they be blessed in a Byzantine Catholic/Eastern Orthodox Church for use in one's home? I know how things are in regard to the Eucharist and so forth among separated churches and wondered if this applied/extrapolated to the usage of icons, crucifixes, etc.

All of this is written in the context of a great love and respect for the Coptic Orthodox Church!

Thank you and God Bless!

Woody

Dear Woody,

I'm a Latin Catholic, so I can't speak for our Eastern brothers and sisters, but I would say if its Christian and orthodox, and you like it, use it.

Some of the most beautiful Christian hymns ever written come from the Protestant tradition and we use them quite a bit.

One that comes to mind is the hymn "How Great Thou Art"; sends chills up and down my spine every time I hear it.

Thank you, Bill.

Although I am (currently) an inquirer/seeker and drawn East-ward, my family and I attend a local Roman Catholic Church. I like the point you made by mentioning the hymns. I share your appreciation of some of those Protestant hymns (which contain PRAISE rather than PROTEST) sung at Mass - How Great Thou Art, Amazing Grace, Fairest Lord Jesus, This Is My Father's World are some of my favorites. I also look forward to learning and singing some of the Catholic hymns (old and new) - which are all NEW to me!

Hi Woodman, www.theotokos.org [theotokos.org] I know very well and have ordered icons from them several times, my Latin Rite priest doesn't have a problem with them in my home, he's more curious about the distinct iconographic style, I also have a hand held Coptic Cross also. All of these icons have been blessed by an Orthodox Priest when I was in that church, now as a Byzantine Catholic, my friends still venerate the icons. So and this is my personal opinion, if icons of various styles, Russian, Greek, Byzatine Catholic, Coptic, Ethiopian etc, can educate oneself or others, it is all for the glory of God! My son also just reminded me, we have friends who are Ethiopian Orthodox and during Lent, they wear an icon of the Crucifixion to remind them of where Lent will take them, on Easter/Pascha, they wear an icon of the Resurrection, a beautiful, personal way to state, "Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen" We have Ethiopian icons also, I thought the long rope/cord was to hang it on the wall, and it can be, through our Ethiopian friends I found out it serves a dual purpose, the wall and wearing around one's neck. So my lesson learned is one is never too old to learn! Hope this helps!
