Brothers and Sisters,

I would be interested in knowing your reading recommendations for understanding and developing an authentic eastern spirituality.

The Philokalia and The Way of the Pilgrim may be the most obvious. Please mention the others you have found most helpful, particularly (but not only!) any that may be readable for the neophyte in things Byzantine.

Thanks,
Robert

"Orthodox Spirituality" by "A Monk of the Eastern Church" who was Father Lev Gillet, the great Orthodox Spiritual Father and theologian. He had a wonderfully diverse background- he was instrumental in helping to found the Double Rite Benedictine monastery at Chevetogne in Belgium and was Secretary to Metropolitan +Andrei of Blessed Memory in Ukraine. After his conversion to Orthodoxy, he served as Chaplain briefly to Mother Maria (Skobtsova)at her convent and service to the poorest of the poor in the Paris of the 1930's. He remained firmly ecumenical in outlook and was a wise and gentle Spiritual Father.

HIGH Recommendation!

Also, his "Year of Grace of the Lord" on the Liturgical Cycle.

You should find these published by St Vladimir's Seminary Press.

Peace,
Brian

I would recommend Fr Alexander Schmemann's "For the Life of the World". This book is an excellent reflection on sacramental theology.

Dear Robert:

You might also want to obtain the two volumes by Nicholas Cabasilas: his commentary on the Divine Liturgy and The Life In Christ. They have been of great value to me and I go back to them periodically.

I'm currently reading "The Eucharist" by Fr. Schmemann and it is a most edifying read. "The Orthodox Way" by Bishop Ware is quite enlightening as well.

Any book or essay by Bishop Kallistos (Timothy Ware)...

.."The Orthodox Church" would be a good start.

Robert, some great recommendations have already been made. I would like to add to Dave's suggestion and recommend you read Kallistos Ware's the Orthodox Church and then the Orthodox Way, also by Bishop Kallistos. A great pair of books to introduce you to the history, traditions and theology of the Eastern Churches.

Also Eastern Christianity: The Byzantine Tradition by Deacon (now priest) Lawrence Cross of the Russian Catholic Church is a neat introduction.

Anything by Alexander Schmemann is golden. Metropolitan Anthony Bloom has also written some very good and readible books on the Byzantine prayer and spiritual tradition.

I would recommend "Way of the Ascetics" by Tito Colliander. I love it - now comes the hard part of living it..... and "The Path to Salvation" by St. Theophan the Recluse. Enjoy!

Dear Robert,

I would second the recommendations made by Glenn above and would also add "The Art Of Prayer:an Orthodox Anthology". I would also add the St. Symeon the new theologian and the St. Nicodemos editions of "The Classics of Western Spirituality" series.

FYI The great little work "The way of the Ascetics is online, maybe someone can give the link.
