As I understand it, the Eastern tradition doesn't accept the notion of the 1000 year of Christ on earth, preferring the western amillennialism espoused by St. Augustine. Is this true? I recall reading about Papias, Irenaeus, Justin Martyr, and several early church eastern people who favored a literal millennium. Do you guys believe in a 1000 year reign of Christ literally on earth? smile

As it is, Christ reigns. If He will return to rule in a more tangible way, that is his business. While we may not be living in an era of peace, we should still work to bring the Kingdom of Peace, so that it will be fuly realized here and now.

To my recogning, 1000 is a symbolic number, indicating a very large, unspecified number. So the 1000 year reign is a very long reign. How long it will be or when is really none of my concern; I only hope in its coming.

Agreed

Abba Isidore the Priest:
When I was younger and remained in my cell I set no limit to prayer; the night was for me as much the time of prayer as the day.

Dear Friends in Christ,
It is now - we are in the millenium. The Orthodox Church condemned the heresy called Chiliasm at the Second Ecumenical Council in 381.

The error lies in misinterpretation of the 20th chapter of the Apocalypse. The thousand yr reign is the period of time from the very beginning of the Church of Christ until the end of the world.

Yours in Christ,
Fr Serafim

Bless Father,

Would that not mean that the end of the world should have occured in the year 1033? Or are we taking a more symbolic approach to the notion of 1000 years?

If I may stick in one more comment; I think it's silly the way Prot Fundies obsess over the time and manner of our LORD's return. He will return when He wants, in the fashion He wants. What is important is to be ready to meet Him when He does come back.

I agree, Columcille. From a Protestant's POV, Christ could return at any moment. What they fail to understand, though, is that they could die any moment and they would be judged just the same. There's something surrounding the Apocalypse that's a big turn off for me, and I know very little about it because I think it's pretty overblown.
