Thank you William, for the clarification.
As you indicate, the Latin Church's justification for annulments would seem consistent with it practice regarding other sacraments.
(That's why I enjoy this forum so much--I'm always learning something!)

I am some kind of confused regarding the marriage anullments in the West. In a Catholic TV programme "The Pope's pulse", the president of the Church Tribunal of the Mexican Archbishophric said that all Catholics had the right to get a marriage anullment, that he has approved almost 100% of the requests he has received, and that the way marriage anullments work is similar to that of the supermarkets:
"when you go to the store and you buy a product, and then the product is defective or you're not satisfied with it, you can give it back and ask for your money. That's what we do here, if your marriage did not work we can annull it as it you've never bought it."
In the case of Orthodoxy, priests tell me that the Church should not divorce in all cases, and that the second marriages of people who married in other religions, or of those who simply separated because of a not so valid reason, are an abuse of Christ's dispensation toward human weakness.

Maybe this is why we end up with "Cafeteria Catholics", picking and choosing what they want to practice and/or believe?

There is a BIG difference between entering Holy Matrimony in Church and a unhappy customer with a defective product bought in a market. Shame on that Archbishop  ! James

I'm not sure I understand all that I just read.But I do know that I am in the throes of petitioning for an annulment and I feel as though I am a criminal. The Church wants everything in writing but no one is willing to speak to me directly. I don't even know if I am doing anything right. This has been going on for about 1 1/2 years because I am having so much trouble with the paperwork. It is a very emotional and disturbing time for me. I do have a rc priest helping me - and canon lawyers at the rc archdiocese - but it is difficult because they feel their hands are tied. Even though I am an eastern rite catholic - 95% of my life has been spent in the rc because there are no churches in any of the areas I've lived.
This is the first site I've found where I can actually learn something about who I really am.

And that was my point about the Latin practice with respect to annulment in North America in the first place.
Better the Orthodox practice here - as in other things too.
