I know those of you have been a prayerful part of the historic suffering of our people understand the important of Jackson-Vanik. For millions of our people, as well as the Jewish people and our other fellow Christians, Jackson-Vanik presented hope for a better day.
While today, we have freedom in Slovakia, Poland, and other places, we know very well that religious freedom has not been acheived in Russia and Belarus. Some members of Congress are looking to undo Jackson-Vanik.
The message must go to Congress that while it would be wise to exempt some countries, a repeal of Jackson-Vanik's application to Russia and Belarus means oppression for Jews and Catholics in these nations.
Don't let Congress help the denial of religious freedom for Jews, Greek Catholics and others in Russia and Belarus.
