I can't find the topic I posted to last time so I'm trying to start a new topic and I hope it works. I'm sorry for not posting an update sooner but the kids are almost out of school and I've been really busy and we were away two weekends in a row. The letters have been really difficult to write. Our priest verified the addresses in Rome and added the list of other Byzantine Catholic bishops around the world who might help stop the changes to the liturgy. The addresses for our bishops are on this website but I know that Bishop Pataki does not listen to laypeople.

Right now we have five peopl willing to write letters. I know that this is not a lot but it is a start. I hope everone who reads this will write at least one letter to someone on this list. Maybe we can convince the other Byzantine Catholic bishops to gang up on our bishops to save the liturgy.

Kapusta,
Of the all the adressess you posted only two are for people have any say in the matter, the Pope and the Prefect for the Eastern Congregation and they have already spoken. We are a sui iuris Church and the bishops of other sui iuris Churches have no vote or say in what we do.

Hmmm...
Write letters to everyone but our own patriarchs. Do you wish to be taken seriously or do you just like to vent? Could you explain why you aren't suggesting that people write to our own bishops? Do you disrespect our Church so much that you are willing to go over their heads?
If you all cared about our Church it seems to me that you would communicate with the leadership of our Church. Is this just another example of people acting as if we aren't really a true Church? If I have a disagreement with my superior I at least have the balls to talk to my superior not to someone else about the disagreement. I at least would show my superior enough respect to communicate with him.
I hope you rethink your stategy if you really love the Church.
Please, allow me to add an alternative to Kapusta's strategy. If you really care about the future of the Church write a letter to OUR patriarch, not someone elses, and encourage them in their work. Pledge your allegiance to the growth of the Church and if you believe as many do that part of that has to do with the liturgy as them to please make study copies available to the people for their observations before they consider promulgating it.
Don't insult them by trying to go around them. Have the courage to communicate directly with them.

"Gang up" upon our bishops? Clearly there is a misunderstanding of how the Church functions.
Kapusta states, "I know that Bishop Pataki does not listen to laypeople." Are you making this statement because you have written to Bishop Andrew about the Liturgy and received a response (or no response) from him?

I am confused.
First, Kapusta seems to deny that the Metropolia of Pittsburgh exists. Is this a Freudian slip or just another Ukie-ism?
Second, isn't it the Pittsburgh Metropolia that is involved with the new liturgy? You know, the non-Melkite, non-Ukrainian, non-Romanian Byzantine Catholics in the USA.
Third, writing letters never amount to a hill of beans.

Just in case anyone decides to hold onto this address list for other purposes, note that Archbishop Cyril's address is incorrect. I won't bother providing an updated one here, because I don't want to further contribute to the confusion.

Dear Joe, Actually, what does the translation issue have to do with the UGCC? A "Ruthie-ism?" Most of us follow the translation of Patriarch Josef the Confessor. And it AIN'T in English! Alex

When writing business letters - or any letter, for that matter - it's well to avoid obscenities and vulgarisms (at least one person who has just posted on this thread please take note), to avoid making threats or offering insults to anyone, but simply to use the ordinary courtesies, state relevant facts, and enclose (if possible) examples of whatever one wishes to bring to the attention of the addressee.
Exercise great care with spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Letters addressed directly to the pope are usually (but not always!) a waste of stamps and paper, since the Holy Father receives far more mail than he could possibly read. However, you might hit the jackpot and reach His Holiness. It is also possible that you may be able to find someone who is able to present your letter to His Holiness. In either event, the letter should be in a large-size white envelope, so that no sheet needs to be folded.
Money-saving tip: when sending letters to other officials of the Roman Curia, it's best to send them to the Nuncio, with a cover letter asking that the business letter be forwarded to the addressee. It works, and the Nuncio will be pleased to do it.
It's also well, of course, to use whatever title and form of address the addressee is apt to prefer. In this case, that might well be:
His Beatitude Patriarch Lubomyr etc.

I said the addesses for our bishops are on this website. I am writing letters to them first but my priest says its a waste of time. If its helepful here they are:
Byzantine Catholic Archeparchy of Pittsburgh His Eminence, Metropolitan Archbishop BASIL 66 Riverview AV Pittsburgh, PA 15214-2253 Phone: 412-231-4000 Fax: 412-231-1697
Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Passaic Most Reverend Andrew Pataki, J.C.L., D.D. 445 Lackawanna Avenue West Paterson, NJ 07424 Phone: 973-890-7777 Fax: 973-890-7175
Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Parma His Grace, Most Rev. John M. Kudrick, D.D. 1900 Carlton Road Parma, OH 44134-3129 Phone: 216-741-8773 Fax: 216-741-9356
Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Van Nuys His Grace, William Charles Skurla, Bishop 8105 North 16th ST Phoenix, AZ 85020 Phone: 602-861-9778 Fax: 602-861-9796
Deacon John: We have already attempted to speak twice to Bishop Pataki. Both times he refused to even hear us out once he found out what we wanted to talk about. Isn't there something in the bible that says to take your dispute with others to the church to ask them to speak with the one making the mistake? Why can't we ask other bishops to speak to our bishops to save the liturgy?
Irish Melkite: This website has: Eparchy of Newton His Grace, Archbishop John A. Elya, B.S. His Grace, Bishop Nicholas J. Samra, Auxiliary Chancery Office 3 VFW Parkway Roslindale, MA 02131 Phone: 617-323-9122 Fax: 617-323-0188 The name of the bishop is wrong and the address is different. What is the correct name and address?

In addition to what Incognitus has outlined, the following guidelines should be borne in mind. Since the Supreme Pontiff has immediate, ordinary jurisdiction in every Particular Church or Diocese in the world, Canon Law affords every Catholic the right of appeal to the Pope. It should be noted, however, that this "right of appeal" presupposes the exhaustion of remedies at the Particular Church or Diocesan level. The appeals process is done through the relevant Roman dicasteries (Congregations, Councils, etc.) and NOT directly with the Pope. Although, as suggested by Incognitus, one might be lucky enough to reach the Pope directly. The Apostolic Nuncio to the U.S. certainly is a good bet for a courier! In the case of this issue under discussion (and assuming that one has exhausted the remedies available at the local level), the appeal/letter should be directed to the specific congregation which would be any of these 3 and copy furnished the other 2: (1) Oriental Churches; (2) Divine Worship; and (3) Doctrine of the Faith. The Vatican advises that letters should be brief, factual, and respectful. Amado

I think I'll write to the bishops and tell them that I love the new liturgy. I base my opinion on the same evidence most everyone else has, rumor and innuendo. I haven't seen the liturgy and neither has anyone else who is complaining about it. So my opinion should be as valuable as there's.
Then I'll issue the coup de grace. I will suggest that the bishops issue a study version so that the people can base their opinion on something else besides rumor and innuendo. Who knows? Maybe I'll change my opinion.

Amado Good afternoon Amado. The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has no jurisdiction in any sui iuris Church. Its competency is only in regard to the Roman liturgy. On another thread, I asked "why have some posters stated that the new translation is in violation of Liturgiam Authenticam? This document pertains only to translations for the RCC. The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments does not have any competency regarding liturgical translations by or for the various sui iuris Churches. If one visits the Congregation`s website to view the document http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/c...c_20010507_liturgiam-authenticam_lt.html one will see that this document concerns "DE USU LINGUARUM POPULARIUM IN LIBRIS LITURGIAE ROMANAE EDENDIS" - vernacular translations for the books of the Roman liturgy. While I can understand that some might want the same rules to apply to non-Roman liturgical translations, to state that this or that translation of a non-Roman liturgical text is in violation of this document is just not correct." Peace, Charles

Dear Friends,
Gosh, you guys have gumption!
Write to my bishop to complain? Are you kidding me?
At the Martyrs' Shrine in Midland, Ontario, the Knights of Columbus put a monument in honour of Met. Andrew Sheptytsky.
The Ukie pilgrimage there tended to dwindle and the bishop didn't seem to want to promote it, so he decided to have the monument moved to the Studite monastery near Orangeville.
I voiced a gentle complaint to someone and, sure enough, someone called me from the bishop's office to talk about my 'opinion' on the matter.
I told them that my opinion is that of the bishop, whatever it is . . . O.K., I'm a coward! I admit it!
But, as I was told, every time they sent a truck to pick the thing up, something happened, a flat tire, mud etc. So the monument stayed where it was.
Then the Studite monastery sort of fell apart, as Fr. Deacon Lance can tell you about it, and so that monument still proudly stands on the hillside of the Shrine where Sts. John de Brebeuf and others once congregated to watch for the supply-laden canoes winding their way down the river from Quebec . . .

Dear Charles B:
Thank you for your rejoinder.
I should have specified, therefore, that the main addressee for such appeals is the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, cc the CDF and the CDWDS.
The COC takes precedence as it is endowed with the first competence in ALL matters concerning the Eastern Catholic Churches.
The CDF takes notice because of its "universal" competence on all doctrinal matters and CDWDS because of its involvement in all matters pertaining to the "moderation and promotion of the sacred liturgy, especially the sacraments, with due regard for the competence of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith."
I take the view that the Roman Curia and other offices and services of the Holy See assist the Supreme Pontiff in the Petrine Ministry, which is "universal" in its application!
Have a nice sunny Florida weekend!
Amado
