Dear Friends, Have a look at this Paraman on the istok site: http://www.istok.net/product.php?productid=2498&cat=0&page=1&featured or just on the home page at http://www.istok.net I've never seen what the full paraman looks like until now - O.K. I've led a sheltered existence! Could someone explain to me what grade of Orthodox monastic would wear this paraman? It is not the Great Schema, correct? I can see why our Basilian Fathers would have named the Carmelite scapular as the "paraman" in Ukrainian! And it signifies carrying one's cross etc.? Alex

Alex, A Stavrophore would wear this, although to be honest even among the Studites I have not seen this worn. It is not the Great Schema, which is the analovos, which corresponds to the Western moastic full scapular, hanging down the front and the back. Hi All
The Paramon shown on Istok is indeed what a stavrophore monk or nun would wear. The reason you have never seen it worn is because it is always worn under ones podrasnik. Hope this helps.

Dear Friends,
And what is the significance for this Paraman?
Stavrophores are the second grade of Monastic - they would receive this with their prayer rope, would they not?
COULD this correspond in any way to the small scapular that Western Catholics (and some Eastern Catholics, I've heard it say) wear?
Alex
