Hello:

On this Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, the Chaldean Catholics everywhere will be celebrating a uniquely Chaldean-Assyrian memorial called Baoutha or Fasting of the Ninevites. We will be having prayers and Holy Liturgies, as well as, a fast and an abstaining from meat during these days. The memorial recalls the period when our forefathers the Ninevites repented from their wickedness as recounted in the Book of Jonah the Prophet.

I would like to know if there is in the Byzantine Churches, other Eastern Churches, and also the Latin Church, a memorial similar to what we have? Do you guys have a fasting repenting type of memorial other than the Great Fast (lent) shared by all?

God bless,

Rony

Dear Rony,

No - the Byzantine tradition has no Fast of the Ninevites - it is an Oriental Orthodox tradition (practiced by OO Churches other than the Assyrian as well).

But I do indeed observe the Fast of the Ninevites and I think your services for these days are beautiful!

In addition, the Coptic Church adds three additional days to the beginning of the Nativity Fast in honour of St Samaan, I believe.

Dear Alex:

Wow, I did not know that the OO Churhes had this tradition as well. I assumed it would be a uniquely tradition of ours due to the fact that it was in rememberance of our repenting ancestors, the ancient people of Nineva.

Rony,

Are there any liturgical or prayer texts in English for this Fasting season? It would be interesting to read these.

Dear DTBrown:

the Rogation of the Ninevites can be found in A.J. Maclean's East Syrian Daily Offices. Though this translation was not done by the Chaldean Church, a Chaldean seminarian friend of mine says that it is ok. You can find the book in gorgiaspress.com

God bless,

Dave,

For portions of Maclean's text, showing the citations for the readings to be used, see:

East Syrian Lectionary [bombaxo.com]

The Assyrian Church of the East's version (which I suspect differs little, if at all from that of their Chaldean Sister Church) is online at:

Rogation of the Ninevites [cired.org]

Many years,

Neil

Dear Friends,

This week was the Fast of the Catechumens in the Armenian Church. We have a five day fast which culminates in the rememberance of the Prophet Jonah and a reflection...

"on the repentace of Nineveh as an example of broad repentance. Saint Nerses the Grace-filled points out the fact that when Saint Gregory the Enlightener emerged from his agony in the pit of Khor Virab the central message of his evangelistic mission was the five days of severe fast (dzom) 'like unto those of Nineveh.' This he purseud as a means of healing and enlightenment and preparation for conversion to the Christian faith." (From the Domar of the Armenian Church).

I hope this info. helps. Thanks for the great topic!
