I find that I am in need of a Spiritual Director . How does one go about finding such a person? I am in North Eastern Ohio and am trying to find a Spiritual Director who is relatively local. Any advise would be welcome.

I recommend taking with your pastor. Some pastors have this vocation. But even if he does not, he is in an excellent position to provide suggestions, as he will either know people who give spiritual direction or know who you could talk with to find such people.

And dont forget to pray about it! The Lord can direct us to the right person if we ask Him to.

Hi,

Also, if they have one, check your diocese's web site.

Here in LA there is at least one official institute in charge of formation for Spiritual Directors.

Both men (lay or ordained) and women can apply to the 3 year program and once they complete it they become "certified" Spiritual Directors and the institute keeps a roster of these people so, when someone needs a spiritual director, you get an interview with someone at the institution and based on that interview and geographic convenience, you get a list of possible Spiritual Directors and you call them and find the right one for you.

I know all of this, because I am in the middle of the process (this weekend I'm going to make the calls to the people on the list I got).

Good luck!

Shalom,
Memo

The tradition tells us that we ALL need a Spiritual Director - congratulations on coming to this important yet often ignored insight.

The Administrator's advice is also quite sound, but again the tradition of the holy ones in East and West suggests that finding the right Spiritual Director can be a difficult trial in itself. In this regard the advice to pray over it is also extremely sound.

May we all be wise enough to follow your example!

Dear McPhelan,

Drive to the nearest monastery, and ask the monks who their spiritual father is. He is either a monk of the monastery, or a monk or other person from someplace else. In either case, go immediately and wait for him (her) to see you.

nicolas,

it's finding the nearest monastery that's the hard part around here.

Ones parish priest would always be your spiritual father wouldn't they? Unless you had one in a monastery or somewhere else that is.
