Well, perhaps he was indeed culturally Ukrainian. But ethnically, if his mother was Ukrainian then he was half Ukrainian. His father came from a Lemko Rusyn village in the Carpathian Mountains of present-day southeastern Poland. Argue, if you wish, that this makes his father Ukrainian too... wink

Not having known Bortniansky (or his parents) personally, I don't know what they considered themselves to be on an ethnic continuum. Present-day Lemki (or Lemkos, if you prefer - not being one myself I'm not dogmatic on the subject) include people who consider themselves Russians, people who consider themselves Ukrainians, people who consider themselves Poles, people who consider themselves White Croats, and people who consider themselves to be a distinct ethnic group. How those of us who have not received the priceless boon of membership in this community are supposed to refer to them in neutral terms is a great mystery. Incognitus

I will correct as you have requested because you are wrong.
Bortiansky is not Russian. He's Ukrainian. It is true that he studied at St. Petersburg but that doesn't make him Russian you know.

***touchy, hmm? I didn't mean to offend, just didn't know that Bortiansky (sp?) is a Ukrainian surname (I assume he was of Ukrainian nationality, as the name is most likely Russian or possibly Polish, no?). I realize that Russian is often a dirty word here, but I just didn't know anything about Bortiansky, poetomu ja prosto oshibalc'ja. My mistake. Thanks for the correction.

***just read the previous interesting comments about Mr. B's ethnicity/nationality after I typed my first reply. Thanks for the clarifications.
