I'm a Latin Riter, so I know nothing of the ascetical practices in the Byzantine Catholic Church.
Can someone either point me to some internet resources describing the starting date and regulations for the upcoming fast for the Feast of the Assumption aka Dormition or post them here? I would like to participate this year as the fast will also be something rather useful to the evangelization conference and my own prayer life. Thanks.
In Him, Mike

Glory to Jesus Christ!
For the Dormition/Assumption Fast:
From 1st till 14th August - meat, fish, eggs, dairy, wine and oil are not consumed. Ideally, there should only be one meal a day, after vespers.
Relaxations are allowed on weekends, when we may have wine and oil, and on the feast of the Transfiguration (6th Aug.) we may have fish.
I hope this helps!
Yours,
Edward

I would add something to what Ed has posted If this is your first 'try' at following the Eastern Fasting Rules - don't be too strict with yourself . Remember this is the ideal and may not 'work' for you - only you know your own personal circumstances. Ease yourself in gently - remember that when it comes to the Great Fast we are eased into it over a period before. Cutting everything that Ed has mentioned in a 'oner' can be very hard. If it looks too restrictive - don't panic - there are some recipes on threads here , that allow for interesting food that is allowable. There is also the interesting factoid that though wine is only permitted at weekends [ well it's alcohol ] the Slavs do not , on the whole , include beer in this :p - their reasoning is that it's liquid bread :p

What is Byzantine custom when a fast coincides with a wedding or other celebratory event?

Marriages are prohibited during fasts, so it is not an issue.

So, if - for example - a Byzantine were to attend the wedding of a Latin during Byzantine fast, he or she would simply refrain from the meal or would they recieve permission to be excused or some other action?

Me I would discuss it with my Spiritual Father - but it is also not a good idea to proclaim to all and sundry that you are fasting either. You have to be careful to draw the fine line between observing the Fast and giving offense to your hosts. Really you just hope that it's possible to eat something . If it's a buffet sort of thing you should manage with a bit of care - a 'sit down meal ' well that could be different As always though - it's easier to confess afterwards than ask permission before Anhelyna

John [/b]John, If by 'Byzantine' you are referring to a family of Eastern Churches, not just the Pittsburgh Metropolia, I can name more than a few people. Σώσον, Κύριε, καί διαφύλαξον ηάς από τών Βασιλιάνικων τάξεων!

[QUOTE] Dear Andrij-- I'm referring to the Byzantine Pittsburgh Metrolpolia in particular and most of the UGCC parishes around me. We don't even get a mention of the Philip, Peter/Paul, or Dormition fasts at my parish, let alone encouragement to observe them! Sigh! John

Dear Michael Thoma,
I've seen your icon of the Saint you have in your avatar before.
Could you give some details of his life?
Are you a Mar Thoma Christian, or Oriental Orthodox?
Alex
