Greetings-

I have recently purchased a most beautiful vigil lamp for my Ikon corner. My question is: is it customary to have it burning 24/7, or simply while at prayer?

Thank you,

Columcille

That depends on how confident you are about safety with this particular lamp.

I only burn mine when I am home and awake. I light it for prayer and then leave it burning until I leave the house or go to bed. I have pets that stay home during the day and I don't want them to knock it over, (mine is free standing).

I put a small amount of holy water in the bottom of the glass and then pour the oil on top of it. That way, if it burns down too far, the water will stop the wick from burning.

I tend to do it this way, perhaps this is not how it is supposed to be, but I'd rather have a home in which to burn a lamp sometimes than a smoldering ash pile.

Christ is Risen, and Best wishes to all!
Stefan

INDEED HE IS RISEN!

Hi Gang!

I was in a craft shop and found several small glass containers that I put my oil in. They also have long cotton wicks. I've found that they are a lot less messy when burning.

I also found some great oil in a Mediterranian food shop. It's called Arabia Lampen Olen and is made for icon lamps. I don't what all is in it since it's written in Arabic but, I found it in the section with all the ikons and things.

hope this helps...

ps
I don't burn my lampda all the time either, only when I'm home and awake.

This weekend, i learned how to prepare oil lamps from the Greeks here in town. What I learned:

Put water in the bottom30-40%.
Fill the rest with oil.
Replace wick (their wicks are small ones, about 1/2 inch long. The wick is suposed to be less than 1/4 inch, so that it burns longer). This ought to last about 14-18 hours in draft free area. The oil used is olive oil (they had a gallon container of Bertolli olive oil).

Dear Columcille,

It is fine to light one's home votive candles and oil lamps only during prayer.

It is a bit risky to go beyond these times.
