The local paper, the Medford, Oregon Mail Tribune had a color picture of the local OCA priest lighting candles on the front page highlighting Orthodox Easter this weekend. In the religion section was an article about Orthodox Easter. The online version of the article is at: Orthodox Easter in the Medford Mail Tribune [ mailtribune.com] Thought it might be of interest. Blessed Pascha to those celebrating according to the Julian Calendar!

Dave, Thanks. Thought this was an interesting definition of "a moveable feast" , but it was a good article overall. a moveable feast, as there is much feasting into the wee hours, while serving a vigil for the return of Christ. Many years, Neil

ROTF...indeed, that was a description of Pascha I had not heard before...feasting while keeping vigil...how funny!
Gaudior, who should, I suppose, be grateful that the press has noticed the Orthodox Church at all...

Thanks for the article. This brings an appreciation of my Orthodox friends (and of course an excuse to relive that excitement of Pascha one more time this year!) Vicki

What an outrage!!! How DARE they!!! I expect secular journalism to not take a sectarian view, but here they clearly do:
"Orthodox Christianity, the Eastern branch that split from Catholicism"
This can be stated in such a manner as to offend neither side, such as, "the Orthodox and Catholic Churches split [from each other" but this newspaper takes the view that the Latins are the original Church and that the Orthodox are schismatics! And they accept letters to the editor "only publish letters from residents within our Southern Oregon and Northern California circulation area"! Anathema!
All that aside, they greatly garbled the reason Orthodox Pasha differs from the Latins' Pascha, attributing it solely to the Julian versus Gregorian Calendar when, if fact, the two calculations of Pascha were different before there was a Gregorian calendar.
A joyous Pascha to all! Photius, Reader

Ah now Photius - come on now - put it down to ignorance Over here some folk think that ECs are the same as EOs - they mean no harm - they just know no better - we have to educate them. [ Actually I seem to be fighting a losing battle on that score ] Pascha is just about there for you - enjoy it and forget about silly journalists for s bit. Anhelyna

Photius, I hadn't noticed that particular line, but I agree with you that it could have been better phrased, even by replacing "from" by "with". Honestly, though, considering how little press we of the East receive, whether Catholic or Orthodox, it wasn't badly done and I doubt that there was sufficient knowledge on the reporter's part to make the distinction - he probably wasn't even conscious of a distinction to be made.
