Among the Russians and Ukrainians, an "honorific Archimandrite" may make use of the crozier, particularly if he is deputizing for a bishop.

Dear Michelle,

This reminds me of a movie director who got up in his chair before they started filming and shouted out:

O.K., listen up folks! In this movie, we have two popes, five Cardinals, 16 bishops, 57 priests, 117 monks, 203 nuns . . .

But I alone am . . .God!!

(I think I'll join you on that break from the Forum . . . when people get upset, I just upset them more, it would seem . . . wink But I still think I'm cute!)

Alex

Since we are talking about Eastern titles- what is a "Canon"? I know on the sign in fron to the local UGCC- the priest is the Very Reverend Canon.

Canon is a title borrowed lock, stock and barrel from the Latins. It is a Latin honorific title, and may or may not carry any extra adminstrative authority depending on the bishop. It used to be reserved for the "cathedral chapter". A dean is usually a canon who acts as a local or regional senior priest to a specific group of clergy placed under his oversight by the bishop.

As a note, some Archimandrites (rarer for Archpriests) have been historically blessed by some bishops to confer minor orders, usually tonsuring readers, in times of necessity.
