There seems to be so many Bibles out there, which would be a good one for me to get . I'm a Byzantine Catholic with renewed faith. I want to learn more

Deke,
Glory to Jesus Christ!
The New American Bible was approved in 1969 by the Inter-Eparchial Liturgy Commission of the Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic Church as the official Catholic Bible for English-speaking people.
Since the Divine Liturgy and the celebration of other Mysteries (Sacraments) are full of Scriptural quotations, it is the New American version that they must agree to.
The translation is excellent.
Hope this helps,
Deacon El

I would recommend the Orthodox Study Bible for the New Testament and the RSV for the Old Testament.

In my opinion the cheapest one would be the best one.

Hey Deke,

Glory to Jesus Christ!

The good old Douay Rheims is the by far the best Bible for Catholics in English. It reads beautifully, but most importantly, it's the most accurate translation of what Scripture actually says-- it's a very literal translation of St. Jerome's Vulgate, which was in turn a very literal translation of the original Hebrew and Greek.

Unfortunately, people tend to like modern translations that read easily, but they don't taking into consideration the accuracy of the translation. It doesn't do much good to understand the text if the text is badly translated!

I can't stand the NAB-- it reads like a business memo (no wonder people have trouble remembering Bible verses nowadays!), and it's been shoved down our throats for the past thirty years.. only very recently as the DR come back into print.

Sorry, this is an issue on which I feel rather strongly... :-)

Ignatius Press in California keeps the RSV - Catholic edition - in print; it's good for general Bible-reading purposes. There isn't any one best English translation; depends on what use you have in mind (if, for example, you're interested in investigating or discussing Biblical references in English literature you need the King James Version; if you want excellent footnotes you need the Jerusalem Bible). Most of us who for whatever reason are serious about the Bible keep several different English translations within easy reach. Incognitus

Saintclaire,
Sure wish they would do an updated version of the Douay Rheims Version.
Footnote of the Fathers etc.

Deacon El writes that
"The New American Bible was approved in 1969 by the Inter-Eparchial Liturgy Commission of the Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic Church as the official Catholic Bible for English-speaking people.

By what authority does that commission make such a determination? I am an English-speaking person and I repudiate this imposition. Among other things, the NAB fails to take the Septuagint into account, which makes it quite improper for our use.
Father Deacon also writes that "the translation is excellent." That is a matter of opinion. He is entitled to his opinion; I am entitled to my opinion (at which the pious may readily guess!) and others are entitled to theirs. Incognitus

I know where you can get a Haydock Douay-Rheims Bible on the internet for $80.48 including shipping. If you want the URL and other info send me a private message. I am not selling it but the store I would recommend I have bought from them 4 times with no problems.

Here is a picture of it:

Description:
New 2 Volume Set Haydock Bible which is the Douay-Rheims Old and New Testaments, complete with the comprehensive commentaries compiled by Rev Father George L Haydock. Each Testament comes bound in a separate kidskin lexide(softcover) cover with a gold embossed design of the Papal Tiara. More importantly, the actual text of the sacred word is set in larger than normal type. The Haydock Bible was originally published in the 1800's. Good Solid Catholic Teaching! Although the Catholic scriptural and patristic commentaries appear in standard footnote format they are abundant enough to fill almost half of each volume. Beautiful Set. Both volumes covered in plastic. The dimensions of the books are 8 1/2"W X 11"H X 3"Thick(thickness being both books together).

I have the (wonderful!) Haydock version of the Douay-Rheims, identical to the one pictured above.

They must've lowered the price in the last couple years...I got scammed!! (No, just kidding, this fantastic edition is worth every penny).

Hi, Stephanos,

Supposedly they ARE coming out with an updated version of the DR-- it's going to be called the New Vulgate or something.

Personally, I like the old DR. I know the language is a bit archaic, but it's beautiful. We dont try to "update" Shakespeare, do we? :-)

God bless,
Karen
