I came across a nice quote from Bishop Kallistos:
It is a remarkable thing how great a difference the presence or absence of pews can make to the whole spirit of Christian worship. There is in Orthodox worship a flexibility, an unselfconscious informality, not found among western congregations, at any rate north of the Alps. Western worshipers, ranged in their neat rows, each in his proper place, cannot move about during the service without causing a disturbance; a western congregation is generally expected to arrive at the beginning and to stay to the end. But in Orthodox worship people can come and go more freely, and nobody is greatly surprised if one moves about during the service. . . . They are at home in their church, not troops on a parade ground, but children in their Fathers house. (Timothy Ware:276)

I seem to recall that it was Bishop Kallistos who, at the 1998 Stamford translation conference, was asked what do to about the problem of pews - and responded, in effect, "Take them out and burn them!" Several forum members were there; perhaps someone remembers the quote, if it's not apocryphal? Yours in Christ, Jeff Mierzejewski

Well hold on now. Remember Paul saying that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bend? He didn't stipulate what position one had to be in so sitting satisfies this.

Alexandr Dear Alexandr, They have pews in the ROCOR church in Mayfield, Pa., which, in it's history, has been affiliated with the Rusyn Greek Catholics, ROCOR, the Russian Metropolia, OCA, and then ROCOR again (they also have "Trojce" candles, and they sing "Preterpivyj" at the end of Lenten services-all throwbacks from their late 1800's-early 1900's Greek Catholic days). When it comes time to do poklonys, all those in the pews jump out into the aisles. I've also seen this in a multiplicity of OCA churches which have pews. It's all rather awkward. In my present Greek Catholic parish, we have pews, and many people just don't do the poklonys-they just watch the clergy and altar servers doing them (in their defense, many of them are old or infirm, so I'll cut them a break). Personally, I'd like to rip out the pews, and just put benches along the wall for the aged and infirm. Dn. Robert

Has anyone ever conducted a poll regarding pews ? It would be interested to see the results.

Once again - another recurring theme. There have been probably dozens of threads on this topic over the years on the Forum. I have even offered international services in the past through with my offshoot side business of "Vostochnik Chainsaw Consultants" (I just got the ol' McCullogh tuned up recently, as a matter of fact). Ooh! Ooh! I know! We can give the pews to the poor for firewood, so they can stay warm during the winter!

Dear Jeff, Bishop Kallistos's quote is not apocryphal in the least; not only did I hear it but the good Bishop, being an honest man, stands by it.
And it's excellent advice: "Take them out and burn them!".

Don't burn them. Make them into iconostases.
