Russian Shawls [ shawls.a-shako.com] I have ordered from this business several times. The link is for silk shawls, but I have bought mainly wool ones, without fringe. (The small and medium sized ones work well for head covering, the others are as big as table cloths!) She also does business on e-bay as Mumonkan. Once she sent a little icon calendar as a free gift - she's a nice lady!

Carole, my wife and several others at our parish wear babushkas during services. It is by no means mandatory or strictly enforced from the pulpit (but the pastor does like them). Anhelyna, you did a bang-up job with the acronyms today...

Wow - Those are beautiful.
How do you wear them? I'm imagining folded into a triangle and then pinned or tied somehow?

Carole, At my former Ruthenian BC parish in FL at least one woman wore a chapel veil, I think more but that has been a few years. I have seen older women wearing chapel veils in a few Orthodox parishes, I think in my own OCA parish. Among Russians, Ukrainians and others it seems more common among immigrants here in the US. I think generally women are wearing hats less. But, among most, if not all, Oriental Orthodox I have visited the women cover their heads at least at Communion. At St. Vartan's in Manhattan I recall a man with a basket of chapel veils for the ladies as they were lining up for communion. Have you talked to the pastor at your new Ruthenian parish? T

Not about this specific issue. But we have introduced ourselves to him. And I was saved somehow from an incredible stupid comment (must have been my guardian angel) when he asked us if we were "Romans" and for some reason I almost said, "No. We're American." Doh! Thankfully for once I did not just blurt out the first thing that popped into my head because a split second later my neural synapses kicked in and I realized he was asking if we were Roman Catholic. Wouldn't I have looked the total dunce! I don't mind looking like an idiot on the Internet but I really hate doing it in person!

Tony At the risk of sounding rude - Why? Do I need the priests permission to wear a hat, scarf or other head covering to Mass?

But, I was reflecting on what you said earlier This is an issue I debate in my own mind all the time. The desire to do what I feel led to do and the desire not to stand out like a sore thumb.
Especially as I have noticed the Ruthenian parish no one else is wearing a head covering, I have not done so.
But I'm still left feeling somewhat "exposed" and underdressed before the Lord. I thought perhaps it would allay your concern about sticking out like a sore thumb. Tony

Carole, One thing to remember about this is not to make such a big deal ofit that it takes away from Christ...if your heart is not right then no amount headcovering will make it so. I cover my head whenever I am in church or praying-not because it's mandatory but out of respect for the presence of Christ and the fact that in the liturgy we are participating in the eternal liturgy of heaven and approaching the throne of grace. And it comes in handy when the church is below thirty degrees during matins!Brrr I wear a large russian shawl(the one like the tablecloths) or sometimes a smaller scarf, depending on how cold it is and which is closest to my hand when I'm heading out the door. While not a Christian site(it is Orthodox Jewish) this link will take you to some directions for tying different types of scarves : www.tznius.com [ tznius.com] God Bless Sarai

In our Ukrainian Catholic parish half the women wear a hat and a few wear those chapel veils. My daughter and the younger girls do not wear head coverings.
