Hello guys,
I just finished performing a concert with my male choir here in Brazil. It was a folclore festival.
Now we're going to start to learn the Liturgy. I've got a book from Oleksander Koshetz, but it's in church Slavonic. If anybody has sheet music for a male choir in Ukrainian, I would appreciate it. I have a friend who went to Ukraine a couple of weeks ago, I hope he brings me some material as well. I really don't have much knowledge when you people are talking about tone 3, tone 4, etc., can someone give me some explanation, maybe it's something that I need to know before I start rehearsing the choir.
Diakuio Vam,
Lauro

Dear Joe,

No there is no Tone 9!

I'm surprised at you!

Haven't you ever read the 17th chapter of Mark? smile

God bless, Big Guy!

Alex

Or another similar cantor's joke when something unexpected comes out, "That's in Tone 7 Bulgarian"...Tone 7 Bulgarian is no longer extant for whatever reason.

Lauro, did you ever check out the Tserkovnyi Naspivi from "Svichado", the Studite publishers in Ukraine? This has Resurrectional, Samohlasni, and Bulharski tones in modern Ukrainian as well as the Dohmati for the eight tones for Vespers, melodies for the Divine Liturgy, Presanctified, Akafist, and lots of other goodies. You can order it from Basilian Press in Toronto if you can't get it in Brazil. Professor Joe Roll also has compiled some similar material as well.

Dear Diak,
Do you have the Basilian Press e-mail, so that I could get in touch with them?

Dear Friends,

Subdeacon Randolph's reference to Svichado Press is excellent.

Their publishing offerings are truly amazing, including, would you believe, a translation of Andre Frossard's "God exists - I have met Him."

It's both cool AND awesome!

Professor Thompson, I look forward to a new pew book. In our current book, it is clear to everyone that the melodies do not fit the English words. I would compare it to singing Gregorian chant melodies with awkwardly worded English translations. And that the book will be in English is wonderful. Our mission has a number of converts and only one Ukrainian family. That family would gladly go to a Ukrainian church if one existed in this area, but they tolerate us peasants because our Divine Liturgy is available smile Of course, they are under the impression that the rest of the congregation is made up of "closet" Ukrainians and that we all really want to be Ukrainian and sing in Slavonic, if we would just admit it smile We don't. We have an English-speaking congregation that wants to sing in its own language, and needs well-crafted English tranlations to do so. You do a fine job and I hope you have many years to continue doing great work for the benefit of us all.

The years he worked for the Church for a pittance have left him unable to even afford his own computer, so for him to publish anything along the lines of some of the others is out of the question. I guess nobody takes you seriously unless you have typeset or laser-printed music (regardless of your qualifications or experience).

I've been looking around for English settings of our prostopinije on-line. I have found surprisingly little, but did find this:

Does anyone know who made these settings and when? Are these the new settings/translations.
Are the ones currently under review on-line anywhere?
