Hi,
Is there a guideline to choose from the eight psalm tones, I mean the proper tone for the certain time/season to sing in breviary?
Thanx.

Glory to Jesus Christ!
You're posting from a long way away, Simeon!
The music of the Roman Rite for the Liturgy of the Hours was formerly contained in a book called the ANTIPHONALE ROMANUM. This gave the melodies for the antiphons, along with the psalm-tones connected with the antiphon.
This book has not been re-issued since the liturgical reforms which followed the Second Vatican Council (unless they did it recently, and, if so, I'm sorry that my information is out of date).
The Benedictine Monastery of Solesmes in France has printed several books-cum-music intended for use with the post-conciliar Liturgy of the Hours, but they use the Benedictine structure rather than the secular Roman use.
The only book that I have seen which gives the traditional chant for the celebration of the Roman Rite's Liturgy of the Hours in any sort of complete form is published by the bishops of Austria, Germany, and German-speaking Switzerland. They published a book with the chant and the text for Morning and Evening Prayer, in German. An outstanding piece of work.
If you are looking for something more specific, you could email me at chantermt@aol.com, and I could help you find it.
Not very often we talk on here about Gregorian chant. <G>

Thanx a lot, Mr. Thompson.
Well, it may be harder to find the books here, but I guess I'll find it in some Catholic bookstore. So for now, is it OK just picking one from those 8 tones/modes and sing it?

If you are referring to the Octoechos - I *THINK* it's tone 2 tomorrow and from there you will be on the weekly cycle - except for a Great Feast of course . but of course how would I know - I'm just the lopsided RC Anhelyna

AAAAAAAAAAH well now - this all depends, I think ,whether you are on the what Alex would call the errr -- True --Umm --Julian Calendar Over here the Ukies are Julian - so Sunday is according to my calculation 11th Sunday after Pentecost and therefore Tone 2 IF you are using the Gregorian Calendar then yes - it is indeed Tone 7 Oh ain't life fun Anhelyna
