Dear Friends, Yesterday Jackie Ava and I brought our 6 week old son Andrew to St. Panteleimon Greek Orthodox Church for the 40 day blessing / presentation to the church. After Father gave Jackie and Andrew a blessing at the nave, Father took Andrew into his arms and carried him up the main aisle. As he walked in he proclaimed (excuse my bad Greek interpretation) "Ekklesia... othoulos e theolou" Can someone please translate this for me ? (Alice, are you there ? ) He then said in English.. "The servant of God, Andrew John is brought into the Church" As Father approached the Iconostasis (while carrying Andrew in his arms), Andrew awoke and stared into Father's eye. Father chuckled. It was very beautiful. Brad.

Just gave the same blessing myself to a child last Sunday. It means, quite simply, "The servant of God N is churched, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen."
For a complete examination and explanation of the services of Baptism and Chrismation, cf. Alexander Schmemann, Of Water and the Spirit, SVS Press, 1974 (it's probably been reprinted since then).

Father Serge Father bless, Thank you Father for the translation but does Ekklesia not mean Church ? What does othoulos and theolou mean ? Kissing you right hand, Brad

Ekklesia means church - but so does naos, in a different sense. O dhoulos means the servant of God. The remaining word I can't cope with until I know the Greek spelling - I don't have a Greek agiasmatarion handy.

I've posted the video on YouTube but will be taking it off in about a week. You'll be able to hear what Fr. Odysseys says right at the beginning. Maybe someone can make it out better than I can. 40 day blessing [ youtube.com] Brad

I've just found out what Father was saying.
It is " O doulos tou theolou"
I understand that mean " This Follower of God"

The tape clarifies the matter - the priest is saying "o dhoulos tou Theou", NOT "theolou".
