I was wondering if there is a particular Eastern understanding of sin/ personal sin. In the West, there are distinctions between venial/ mortal sins and there is a lot of attention on determining culpability, etc, etc. This to me appears to be an approach that is highly legalistic, almost methodic or scientific. Does Eastern theology allow for such concepts as venial versus mortal sins? Is there also an attempt to determine/define culpability, etc in the East?
I think I am finally beginning to understand the difference in approaches to original sin/ man's fallen nature between East and West (and mainly thanks to this very cool and informative forum!).
Now, I'd like to try and tackle a bit the different approaches to the topic of personal sin.
Any insights any one may have would be appreciated or if someone could recommend some reading material (preferably on the internet)that would also be much appreciated. If I've missed any pertinent threads on this forum regarding this topic, please let me know and sorry for any redundance!
Hope you are all having a good New Year. Ooops...unless of course you are on Julian Calendar and are still waiting for New Year!
God bless,
John
