I can tell you that Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity have in thier rule that whenever they are not actively serving someone, they are to pray the Rosary. They do this inorder to avoid being idle and to keep their minds on heavenly things.

Indeed! I see Sisters of Charity on the bus quite often and they are always praying their rosary, wether they are standing or sitting, no matter how crowded the bus is. It's quite moving and has on more than one occasion made me start praying it along with them, even if I don't have my rosary handy.

Dear ByzJohn,

It was St Alexander Akoimetes (the "Unsleeping One") who founded a Greek monastery where the Divine Praises were sung unceasingly by monks who took turns in choir 24 hours a day.

In Russia, as we read in the Way of the Pilgrim, there were monasteries were the Psalter was read 24 hours a day and one could join such by simply agreeing to pray the Psalms in church for four hours at a time.

The Rosarians and some other Western orders imitated this Eastern style and began the continuous Rosary 24 hours a day. The Order of Nuns at Tyburn do continuous 24 hour a day Eucharistic Adoration with a nun taking over from another at the start of every hour.

The use of the Latin Rosary as the Jesus Prayer is also prevalent among monastics and saints since the Hail Mary prayer contains the Name of Jesus within it.

It has been used as a form of spiritual Communion and as a way of repeating the Name of Jesus while meditating on the Incarnation of our Lord.

St Pius of Pietrelcina prayed, as it is known, 20, 30 or even 40 full 15 decade Rosaries daily.

Pere Lamy of France who had so many visions prayed the rosary constantly as well.

St Clement Hofbauer of the Redemptorists prayed 12 15-decade Rosaries a day. St Pedro de Betancur, recently canonized by the Pope, prayed three full rosaries daily amidst many chores and tasks.

Ultimately, it matters not which prayer one chooses, but that one prays it constantly and unceasingly.

Alex

Hi John:

There are many "Rosary-type" prayers, including, of course, the Franciscan Crown, and numerous other chaplets.

I have always liked the Jesus prayer best - I find it helps me to focus better on the prayer itself than on the words. I use a prayer rope. You can buy these at many Byzantine church bookshops or from mail order places such as the Icon and Book Service.

Cheerio,
Annie
