I need some help, I know that the Western Church has many, many different titles for Mary. I was hoping if you all could please post some titles that the Eastern Churches use for Mary.

Thanks.

Well, I ran around to some of the titles already posted in differnt places on the forum;

Alex posted:
The Russians call her "Presvyata Bogaroditsa" or the "Most Holy God-Bearer."

I've also seen "the Most Pure Virgin Mary."

The name given to her in the Russian calendar for her feasts is, for example: "The Entrance into the Temple of our Most Holy Sovereign Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary" and always using that style.

This is from a recent discussion, it may help for now until everyone gets on tomorrow. I am sure there are many more.

We have actually many MANY titles for Our Lady, the Most Holy Mother of God. I always dislike "Birth-Giver"---because it makes Our Lady sound like a 'thing'...just a vessel, rather than a person. But we have hundreds: 'Our Lady, Mother of God, Abbess of the Holy Mountain,' 'Our Lady of Pochev,' 'Joy of All Who Sorrow' 'Mother of God Zirovitsky' 'Mother of God Vladimir' 'Mother of God of Korsun' 'Mother of God Helper of the Helpless' 'Mother of God of Seeker of the Lost' 'Mother of God Milk Giver' 'Mother of God of the Passion' (Perpetual Help in the West)...and literally hundreds of others. Each of her icons has a special title by which she is known (above are some of these just off the top of my head). My faves: 'Of the Passion' (which is Alice's icon next to her name)...and 'Mother of God of Sorrows.' Most of all I like to think of her as 'Our Mother and Queen---Queen of the Church!'

May she always intercede for us before the throne of her Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ!

In her service,
+Fr. Gregory, who loves her!

Father Gregory,

Is there a list on-line of these titles for everyday?

That is wonderful!

Through the prayers of the Theotokos,

Gordo if I remember correctly, many of the litneys of the West are taken from the prayers of the East. Especially the Akathist hymns, so many times the names click as sounding familar in our prayers.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Check the Akathist to the Mother of God. The list is almost breathtakingly endless.

Dear Friend,

As our Fathers here have said, there are many titles we give to the Mother of God.

"What honour should to that Woman be done, who had God for Father, Spouse and Son?"

There are over 1,000 miraculous icons and their many copies venerated by Orthodox Christians of the Mother of God.

To give some indication, there is the famous icon of the Pochayiv Mother of God in western Ukraine.

There are more than 300 miraculous copies of this icon alone venerated around the world. Then there are the endless numbers of miraculous copies of the Kazan icon, the Vladimir icon etc. etc.

There is an article in Russian on this site: akafist.narod.ru that is a theological discussion of the Mariological titles, including Spouse of the Holy Spirit etc.

Devotion to the Mother of God in the East is like that in the West - with the difference that in the East it is that much deeper, more beautiful, liturgically richer . . .

(Alex - stop that! It's Lent and you promised!)

Yes, suffice it to say that the Christian East has a devotion to the Mother of God too!

As Fr. Deacon El said, the Akathist contains a great amount of titles.

So you can go to El for further information. wink

Here's a page from the OCA's website that gives you the titles and icons of the Theotokos that are venerated each month throughout the year.

Dear Friend in Christ Alex,

I think there are millions who go to the Basilica in Ciudad de Mexico each December who would have an issue with that.

On another note (forgive the thread drift) in the small but vibrant Latino community in Pittsburgh, after Holy Friday services there will be a procession offering Condolences to the Holy Mother of God. The esposa and I plan to attend.

As Sister Jean Marie of the good Sisters of St. Basil told me - the East and West compliment each other. biggrin
