The web-site of Patronage parish in Baltimore has added the 1970 Irmologion of S. Papp and N. Petrasevych together with mp3 of recordings of the chant. The download files are big, but worth the wait. And the chanter has such a nice touch. WOW! Also a recording of the Divine Liturgy, 1966: Cathedral of St. Michael, Passaic, NJ, Stephen Kocisko, Bishop of Passaic - and others. Djs, this recording and notes was distributed by
the Carpatho-Rusyn Research Center (then in Englewood NJ) with financial support of Archbishop Kocisko and Bishop Dudick in 1979. The
art work depicts folk icons from the Rusyn Wooden Churches of Subcarpathian-Rus'. I will try to download the files later tonight.

Wow! Now that's what I call liturgical singing!
I'm downloading the Paschal music first. If I didn't know better, I would say the Cantor is Basil Brody from St. John's (South Side-Pitts'burgu). I do detect a little Galician (pronouciation) influence, which is found in Rusyn
parishes of the Prjashev Eparchy that are close to the Polish border. I had completely forgot that The Rusyn Research Center distributed this recording. It is a shame that the we here in America can't seem to duplicate this quality of singing with the 40 yrs. plus of translating Rusyn Prostopinje into English. I am greatful for Professor Stephen Reynold's lifelong study of Rusyn Prostopinije. It is amazing that Rusyn Prostopinije is often appreciated more by those outside the Rusyn Greek Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Many of the younger generations (including priests) lack a true appreciation of Prostopinije. Thanks to Patronage parish for putting this recording on their website!

I hear interesting pronunciations: jegda but Hospod; "y"'s with various colors including the back of the throat schwa. And the chanting offers so much education. Gotta run... Later.

The English foreward to the Popp/Petrashevich IRMOLOGION says:
"The book is published under its traditional title (i.e., IRMOLOGION) since its pristine title (Tserkovnoje Prostopinije, the Church Plainchant) doesn't express properly its contents and music. Simultaneously, we made available the music of the entire "Irmologion" on long-playing records. Thus we hope to bring about the renewal of our liturgical chant and, to some extent, solve the problem of training our new cantors."
Though the recordings were distributed in the US by the Carpatho-Rusyn Research Center (and God bless them for it), they did not MAKE the recordings, which were done in Czechoslovakia at the same time (1970) when the IRMOLOGION was released.

Ung-Certez Actually, I'm amazed we still sing anything close to the Bokshai/Malnych/Papp arrangements in English! Given the difficulty of translation and the reticence of using melismas in modern music the simple fact that our parishes still SING the Liturgy is profound. If this material had been more available over the years maybe you would hear the style more often. The fact that the recordings are available publically is fantastic. Now cantors who wish to hear this music can. If only the Irmologion were still in print to go with it....  At least "Prostopinije" is still available as is Sokol's "Plain Chant" blue book.
