Medved -
I-68 opened up in 1991, and I left DC-MD-VA in 1994.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike is to be avoided if at all possible. Traffic gets worse with each passing year, with trucks, etc. I used to drive from Savage (Howard County) to Streetsboro (near Geauga Lake) and if you have a car that doesn't climb the mountains easily, I-68 can be tough. The Turnpike was built on an abandoned railway right of way. When the Mon-Fayette Expressway connects I-68 with I-70, then there will be a nearly complete bypass of that 86 mile stretch between Breezewood and New Stanton, which is windy and dangerous. As my seora would say in her native Colombia, "Buen viaje!"
Iconophile - I do not know if camping is permitted at the pilgrammage, but I will ask and post it here when I next visit. There are campgrounds that are not far, as Fayette County has a fair bit of tourist trade.

I'm pretty sure people do camp at the "racetrack" a field on the grounds. I think I've seen both tents and RV's there. Originally posted by iconophile: My only experience with big pilgrimages is the Assumption day pilgrimage at Our Lady of Consolation at Carey Ohio [a beautiful shrine by the way] There, people [mostly Chaldean Catholics from Detroit] sleep in the church or pitch tents on the grounds. Is it like that, or do you have to pay for campsites?

Camping at the Uniontown pilgrimage is most definitely permitted and the necessary sanitary facilities are close to the "Racetrack" area where tents get pitched.
Along with a daily schedule of liturgical services there are special programs for children, teens and young adults. The average age of "palomniky" (Pilgrims) seems to decrease yearly!
Meanwhile, all the folks who still long for Church Slavonic Liturgy should seize the opportunity to celebrate one on Sunday at 9am.
For anyone who is curious about the Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Church, the Uniontown Pilgrimage is a great place to meet us and share faith.
See you there.

Thanks; now a couple other questions: 1] Are there vendors? Can one simply set up a table and sell icons? Or is there a more formal registration? 2]Is there going to be a Forum meeting?

How long does it take to get there from the Philly area? According to yahoo, its 268 miles from Bethlehem to Uniontown and it takes 5hr 43min. Mount Macrina i s located across the road from Red Lobster and the Mall. web page [ maps.yahoo.com] I never did this before so I hope this link works. God will bless you tremendously if you can attend the pilgrimage, if only for a day.

Iconophile, you'd want to get permission from the Sisters before you consider setting up any sort of booth. I have rarely seen vendors or even information booths in the 25 years that I have been attending the pilgrimage.

Hi PaulB
That link works but, the directions that site gives are TERRIBLE! There are a couple of easier ways to get there other than using the Turnpike... they also bring you down that back road! It's much easier to take I-70 to US 51 South and follow that to US 119. This takes you right past Mt.St.Macrina...
I've been having TERRIBLE LUCK with maps from YAHOO and MAPQUEST the last few days. They seem to going out of their way to send people on the WORST ROADS in the country!
hope this helps....

"So priketh hym nature in hyr courages that longen folk to goen on pilgrimages"
Alas, the rest of it doesn't fit, because it refers to spring pilgrimages.

gtJC!
yup, I'll be there this year with my friend Jennie - a very sweet, vibrant 75 year young woman. The good sisters have a wheelchair for her. The total head count from Annunciation in Anaheim that I know of is six. This will be the first year with a processional banner - if all goes well, that is.
Jennie and I enjoyed the Olympia pilgrimage very much (most of the photos will be forth coming next week sometime - ALL the pics with Bishop William are toast!! Bummer!). This was her first Byzantine Pilgrimage.
Well - must get back to my little bit of shut eye as we take off from LAX Thurs. at 8:30am and land in PIT at 5:32pm.
toodles & God bless, sUSAn

Everybody,
Have a wonderful time, please pray for this sinner and my family - I'm missing Otpust this year - and:
Take your umbrella
Take your sunscreen
Drink PLENTY of water. There are water stations scattered along the grounds. They are kept stocked with cups and ice cold H2O by some wonderful volunteers all weekend.
With a wee sniff (I'd really like to come, but it just is not a happenin' thang this year)
Sharon
