Alex Sure is a lot more fun than that degraded life I led as an Atheist, what with all those boring old orgies and stuff. ("I tremble when I think that God is just ... then I breathe a sigh of relief when I remember that He also has a great sense of humor." - T. Jefferson, slightly paraphrased)

Dear Dolly, Yes, I used to tell my religion students that while fasting, even sexual fasting, was enforced by the canons of the Church during Lent, such abstinence, including sexual abstinence was forbidden during Easter Week. At that, a student would always turn to the girl next to him and jokingly say, "Is next Thursday good for you?" Alex

Alex Hmmm ... any change you'll be visiting Southern California next Easter, Alex?

Dear Dolly, Not very likely . . .I'm afraid of earthquakes. Although some of my old girlfriends in college DID remark that the earth seemed to move beneath them during our dates . . . Alex

Hello Dolly! Besides, aren't you thinking about becoming a Dominican religious? Alex

It isn't that I would prefere to have a male butcher the reading or chanting simply because he is a male. I was simply saying that if there IS a male, and he can presumably sing in such a way as to allow for a prayful atmosphere, then this is the ideal. The reality is often far from the ideal. This is so in my own church where the women just seem to be more open and available to serve in cantor/reader capacities. This of course begs the question of if allowing this "enables" the presumed apathy of the men in our church. Perhaps if men would feel compelled if no one else would do it. Men, seem to often not do something if a woman will do it for them. I don't think men are apathetic. Just the opposite. Today, it is not unusual for Orthodox and Catholics parishes to have female volunteers as cantors. Maybe the parish will provide her with some "pin money". The Tradition is for a paid, professional cantor who would have high social rank. Paid work = male; volunteer work = female in the minds of the faithful. If we are to return to tradition, let us return to tradition, but let us not pick and choose aspects! Get out the checkbook. Axios

Alex I wasn't just thinking about it, I actually tried it a few years ago. Bottom line: It didn't take!

I once knew someone who entered the Dominican novitiate and met up with a few of us a while later. One wag looked at our friend and said: "You have a nerve wearing white." Things went downhill from there.
Blessings!

Beads, that could be a whole other topic - like, does it make a difference if you use a prayer *rope* versus prayer *beads*? The Dominicans were great, BTW -- I just couldn't face sleeping on top of a huge wooden chest with a 1/2-inch thick mattress on top for the rest of my life. Oy vey!!* *see, no Latin!

Hello Dolly! Actually, one can find wooden beads for the Jesus Prayer in Orthodox monasteries. The Russian Old Believers have a leather "ladder rosary" called a Lestovka. And I've also seen little wooden fishes with beads stuck in them for purposes of counting one's prayers! Counters are counters! You should belong to the Third Order Dominicans, then! All the benefits of the Order with only half of the inconvenience! Alex

Nah, I decided my true vocation is to be a gentle light and inspiration to the world, just like I've been doing over at "The Passion".

Dear Dolly, Never mind about the boys on that other thread! They must have all gone to an all-boys Catholic high school and they still feel nervous around women . . . You are a blessing to us all here! Alex
