Friends,

Today His Holiness Patriarch Lubomyr was in Los Angeles to visit the Ukrainian Church there.

I made a website here with all the pictures I took so everyone can see. The pictures however are basically in reverse chronological order, so I added captions so you can see at what point in the Liturgy it was taken at.

The Liturgy began with a procession around the church, which is a revered tradition at the LA parish. The Liturgy itself was not Hierarchal; it was merely a regular Sunday Liturgy with Transfiguration propers, along with Blessing of the fruit, and Blessing of the newly restored iconography.

At the banquet, he was introduced as "His Holiness Lubomyr, Patriarch of Kyiv, Metropolitan of L'viv and Halcyh and All Rus Ukraine." biggrin biggrin biggrin

The two priests from both Ukrainian Orthodox parishes in LA were there, along with the Ukr. Catholic pastor from San Diego. There was also a monk from Holy Ressurection Monastery, and a Roman Catholic priest as guests.

I got to speak with him at length at the banquet. He is a very humble, down to earth, and funny man. The only thing I regret is that I forgot to ask who he voted for in the Conclave... :p

Enjoy.

Dear UC,

I believe its' "His Beatitude" rather than "His Holiness."

If he were a "Holiness," this would signify that he would no longer be in communion with Rome.

The last time I looked, Patriarch Lubomyr insisted that he is.

Also, there is no offence at using "His Beatitude."

The early Popes of Rome also used this title before they began to imitate the styles used by the Popes of Alexandria.

Dr. Alex,

It is what he was introduced as. That is not how I adressed him.

In his homily or talk in the hall, he really made little to no mention of the pope.

Dear UC,

Yes, our patriarchalists prefer the styling, "His Holiness."

Not that there's anything wrong with that! wink

It's very "Orthodox."

And he says we're "Orthodox in communion with Rome."

So it's "His Holiness" and that is that!

Cheers,

Alex

Dear uc,

Kudos for the pics. I pray that the planting of the gospel in Los Angeles by Patriarch Lubomyr yields a great harvest.

Thanks Paul for your kudos.

I've added some more pictures and will continue to do so as fellow parishioners send them in.

Alex,

The Patriarchal organization of LA raised over $50,000 for the new Patriarchal Sobor in Kyiv. I know people at the banquest gave about $5,000 after hearng the Patriarch speak.

This weekend was their moment to shine, so they went all out with the formailities and speeches for the Patriarch.

uc,
Apparently the LA Times didn't cover the Patriarch's visit. Do you know of any popular press coverage?

Tobit,

No Press coverage that I have been aware of. There was also no official representitive of Cardinal Mohoney. I was told that the Archdiocese of LA and Mohoney are on vacation.

I think if Mohoney was there, then there would have been press.

What's up with the one guy going up to get a blessing from a major Archbishop wearing a Hawaiian shirt and a fanny pack with sunglasses propped on his head?

I hope Jakub knows that Abp. Mahoney is on vacation.

Could it be that Patriarch Lubomyr is assumming the LA archdiocesan see? wink

Wow! change ALA to the Ukrainian liturgy. Knowing Angelenos it would probably bring many back to the church!!

OK, guys, before we continue heaping invectives upon the Metropolitan Archbishop of Los Angeles, let's get things straight! wink

Otherwise, we are sinning against some other additional person, whoever that may be! :p

His name is Cardinal Mahony, without an "e", Roger Michael Cardinal Mahony, that is!

Amado

P.S. I am at a loss as to why we have to push Cardinal Husar's pastoral visit to LA away from the limelight? Do we have to underscore the perceived weaknesses of Cardinal Mahony in an attempt to highlight the uneventful visit of the UGCC's chief hierarch? Shame on me!
