After some four years of being an Outreach of St Nicholas of Myra Byzantine Catholic Church of Anchorage, Alaska, we recently received official word from our Bishop William(Skurla) of changing to a mission.
We are honored that the new church will be named, Blessed (Bishop) Theodore G. Romzha, probably the first time his name will be used for a church in the Byzantine church of America.
Those families who used to travel 50-60 miles(before the Outreach became a reality) to St Nicholas in Anchorage, now will take on the responsibility of seeking funds to add to their account, to build a church on property purchased last year.
Presently they are meeting(and have been these past years) for Divine Liturgy every Sunday afternoon at the old Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Wasilla, Alaska . Wasilla and Palmer(nearby) are the fastest growing area of the Matanuska-Suisitna Borough. Can you imagine this borough and its size(equal to nine(9) states of the Lower 48--check Alaska Almanac) and within it will hold a church someday--we hope soon--in honor of this great and dedicated Bishop, who laid down his life for his flock.
As a parishioner(cantor) of St Nicholas in Anchorage, I just wanted to let you know how proud I am that Blessed Romzha will grace our church in Wasilla. A church opening (when its built)--not a closing--what a glorious day. John

Congratulations..... Will the actual name of the church be Blessed (Bishop) Theodore G. Romzha? I'm very happy for this new mission and for St. Nicholas of Myra.

As I receive further information on this from my pastor, I will pass it on. Supposedly, more information to arrive within two weeks or check St Nicholas site---www.ak-byz-cath.org . John

Thanks for this news, John. We exchanged regarding the Byzantine mission in Wasilla before. We are the people who lived in Anchorage 20 and Palmer 10 years. Left Alaska for WA. State in 94. I am just wondering where the property is you mention. I know where the old Sacred Heart church building is...used to go there.

I also remember some time back we were praying here on our prayer category of this forum for your health. Hope you are better now.

In Christ,

Porter (Mary Jo)

Maybe we will see you in Wasilla someday when we visit Alaska again. smile

Big John, a very hearty congratulations!
I used to go to St Nicholas to celebrate the Divine Liturgy when I was stationed at Elmendorf in 99.
Could you private message me and tell me what ever happened to the pastor that was there then.
His name was Fr. Stephen (something)

Mary Jo(Porter)-- Property bought is on Selden Rd, Wasilla. I did not know that someone put my illness on this site. After two months, wound on ankle almost healed. Thank you to those who prayed for me.

Hi John, yes we did pray for you. Can't remember just who posted it. Glad your ankle is better. We left the Valley in 86. I must admit I don't recall "Selden Rd."...what is it near? Sounds like out of Wasilla a ways??? Maybe a new road since we left...

Thanks and blessings to you, yours, and the new Church-Blessed Bishop Theodore Romzha's.

Mary Jo
