Has anyone attended a recent mission conducted by the Ukrainian Redemptorists lately? Are they still doing them or are they too busy taking care of their own parihses?

Anyone have any information or feedback?

Thank you all very much!

God Bless Everyone!

Dear Stefan,

They are no longer around in Eastern Canada, alas.

I know this also because I no longer hear the "clicking" of their long rosary beads anywhere wink

Who exactly are the Redemptorist anyway? Are they similar in their mission to the Jesuits?

Are they more conservative and traditional at present then the latter (I hope)!?

Thanks and God bless

The Redemptorist are a Catholic order of male religious, both priests and Brothers, founded by St. Alphonsus de Ligouri in 1732.

In the early 1900's a Belgian priest, Fr. Delaere became aware of the profound lack of clergy to minister to Ukrainian Catholics in western Canada. He founded a special branch of the order to minister to Greek Catholics.

In 1913, the Greek Catholic Redemptorists started working in Ukraine itself. Four Ukrainian Redemporist martyrs were beatified last year during the Holy Father's visit to Ukraine.

Blessed Zenon Kovalyk (+1941)
Blessed Nicholas Charnetsky (+1959)
Blessed Ivan Ziatyk (+1952)
and
Blessed Vasyl Velychkovsky (+1973)

More information can be obtained from the Yorkton Redemptorist web site http://www.yorktonredemptorists.com/

As for the Jesuits, we are also privledged to have some remarkable Eastern Catholics among their ranks as well.

One is the Archimandrite Robert Taft, who is a professor and scholar, and also noteworthy is the Superior General of the Society of Jesus itself Rev. Father Peter-Hans Kolvenbach who is a Dutch born Armenian Catholic.

Hope this information is usefull.

Dear Friends,

Among Canadian-Ukrainian Redemptorists are Metropolitan Michael Bzdel of Winnipeg and Bishop Michael Wiwchar of Saskatoon and St. Nicholas Eparchy in Chicago.

Among American Redeptorists, the most prominent is St. John Neumann, our only Bishop/Saint.

The Redemptorists have the care of the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help at a Church in Rome. Those who are interested may want to check the website of OLPH Basilica in Boston.

Happy Feast of Our Lady of Fatima!

Dear Stefan-Ivan,

If you are really interested in Ukrainian Redemptorists I have been told that the Transalpine Remptorists may be preaching a mission in USA sometime this year. These Redemptorists are in communion with the Society of St. Pope Pius X.

Happy Feastday of Our Lady of Fatima,

Dear Stefan-Ivan,

Jesuits founded and/or served all of the Russian Byzantine Catholic parishes in the Americas. Some of the confessors of the faith include:

Servant of God, Fr. Valodga (Walter) Ciszek, SJ, confessor (1904-1984) He survived 14 years in the Soviet prison system. He spent another 9 years serving the Underground Church (Russians, Ukrainians, Poles, Lithuanians, etc.) in the USSR. He later served the Russian Pokrova Chapel at Fordham University in New York.

Fr. Pietro Leoni, SJ, confessor (1909-1995)
He spent 13 years in the USSR, 10 in the Soviet prison system. He later served the Russian parish in Montreal, Canada.

Fr. Vassilij (Charles) Bourgeois, SJ, confessor (1887-1963)
The dean of Russian Byzantine Catholic Jesuits, he served the Russian and Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic communities at Paris, Rome, Belarus, Carpatho-Rus' and Russia. He spent several years in Estonia, waiting to enter the USSR and was imprisoned by the Nazis for over two years. He later served the Russian Byzantine Catholic community in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The Byzantine Remptorists and the Byzantine Jesuits also shared the Russian apostolate. Both operated in eastern Poland serving Russian and Belarusian parishes. St. Nikolaj Charnetsky served as the only Byzantine Catholic bishop (1931-1939)in the area. The bishop-martyr also ordained several Jesuit priests at the Russicum and gave spiritual conferences in Rome, Czechoslovakia and Poland. He served the Russian liturgy and he even preached in Russian.

Dear Paul;

Thank you for the interesting information but since the Transalpine Redemptorists are not in communion with our Apostolic Administrator (Bishop MICHAEL) I don't think that is an option wink .

(Besides, I think they do the Ignatian Spiritual Exercised don't they? wink wink .)

Dear Friends,

Fr. Michael Schudlo of the Redemptorists at Yorkton had a great impact on my life, his prayerbook and his articles in the "Redeemer's Voice" journal et al.

I once attended a mission he gave here and it was like going to see the rock star whose records one has listened to all one's life - I know, I need to get a life wink .

I still have the translations of the Akathists he made and I still peep into his prayerbook for inspiration.

Alex
