Hi, I'm going to be studying in Italy for the next few months and have been trying to find an Eastern Catholic parish somewhere near where I'm going to be (Padova/Padua, near Venice). So far I've found a Ukrainian Catholic church in Rome (too far to go regularly) and a Russian Orthodox church in Verona. I also have a few places that I might e-mail to see if they can point me in the right direction, but I thought I would try asking here first since all of you seem to be very knowledgeable about this sort of thing. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Anna, you might try to visit the monastery of Grottoferrata. Also in Calabria there are several Greek Catholic parishes. Unfortunately most of the Greek Catholic activity is centered around Rome.

The Russicum has a nice chapel, located at Pontificio Collegio Russo (Russicum)
Via Carlo Cattaneo, 2A, 00185 Rome, Italy
Tel: (3906) 4465609
They used to have Saturday Vespers at 6 PM and Sunday Divine Liturgy at 10 AM, but, as you say, Rome will be far from there.

Also not to far from the Piazza San Pietro in Rome is the nice little Russian Catholic convent of the Dormition. Their info:
Monastero Russo Uspenskij
via della Pisana, 346, 00163 Rome, Italy
Tel.: (3906) 66152344
E-Mail: dormizione@tiscalinet.it Sister Maria used to be the Hegumena (Prioress)

If you are ever near Milano Archpriest Romano Scalfi has the very nice Russia Cristiana mission:
Fondazione Russia Cristiana
Via Ponzio, 44, 20133 Milan, Italy
Tel: (3902) 2663432
Fax: (3902) 2365011

They have an Italian website at http://www.russiacristiana.org

As far as I remember, there are no Greek Catholic parishes in Northern Italy. I attended Divine Liturgy and Vespers at the Russicum when I visited there 6 years ago.

Most of them are in the South and Sicily.

Dear Anna,

There are quite a number of Ukrainian Greco-Catholic communities in Italy. The last number I heard was 70+, but that was at least half a year ago. This has kept Kyr Hlib very busy (in addition to being responsible for Spain and Ireland). I'll see what contact information I can dig up for you, but it may take me a day or two.

Shlomo Lkhoolkhoon,

Also a great idea is to contact the different colleges and Church "embassies". When I was in Rome, the members of the Ethiopian College, which is the only college left on Vatican grounds, had me over for lunch almost everyday. Plus, you get to see private areas of the Vatican that tourist don't get.

As to the "embassy" reference, I found out that each constituent Church has a designated representative in Rome, for us it is Emile EID, Maronite Patriarchal Vicar of Rome, who is our ambassdor to the Holy See for the Maronite Church. Not only that, but each religious congragation has their own abassador. They sometines provide sleeping quarters for visitors.

Dear Anna,

Try ringing +39 06474 4068. This is the office number of Bishop Hlib Lonchyna, Apostolic Visitator for the Ukrainian Greco-Catholics in Italy. They should be able to help you out.

Good luck!

Cara Anna,

In Cristo,
Andrea

I have heard about a Church in Milan where the Bizantine Lithurgy is regularly celebrated every Sunday (at 10.30 am). It is the Church of S. Maurizio, Corso Magenta, 15; the website of the Abbey of Grottaferrata (http://www.abbaziagreca.it/eventi.htm) gives even a phone number to require further informations: +39.348.78.13.356.
Another Byzantine Catholic Church is in Turin: S. Michele Arcangelo; they have a website: http://sanmichelebizantino.interfree.it/ ; Sunday lithurgy is at 10 am; it is more distant from the location of your studies than Milan.
In Rome there is the Church of S. Atanasio; Sunday lithurgy 10.30 am (http://digilander.libero.it/intersinodo/page3.html); I think it is in Via del Corso.
At the same latitude than Rome there is a BC Church in Villa Badessa, a little village near the towns of Chieti and Pescara (www.villabadessa.org [villabadessa.org]).

If my information is correct - and I do trust the source- there is also a Ukie parish at

Sts. Sergius & Bacchus, parish church, museum and guest house

Piazza Madonna dei Monti, 3

Via Serpentini

00184 Roma, Italia

+3906 485 778

If all goes well - you will hear more about that later this year biggrin

Dear Anhelyna,

The parish church you mention has a miraculous copy of Our Lady of Zhirovits icon that is in my avatar.

The Italians in particular have a tender devotion to it and call it: "Madonna del Pascuolo."

I obtained a copy of this very icon, mounted on wood, and placed in on the Tetrapod in my in-laws' parish, with the Grotto of Zhirovitsi, so that people may always venerate it with a kiss as they come up for Communion or a blessing.

Dear Friends, I think that AnnaZ needs a church in Padua or Venice not in cities that are quite a distance from there. Andrew has suggested an Orthodox church in Padua. There is of course the Greek Orthodox cathedral in Venice. At this point, I don't know of an Greek-Catholic church in either of those cities. Anna, hope you find one, Vito

Alex ,

Truly you astound me smile smile smile

As I said - if all goes well I will be there in April - though on the Sunday I will not be able to be at the Divine Liturgy of St John there frown - I'll be at the Ordination to the Diaconate of my former pupil presently in the Scots College in Rome biggrin

However I will indeed see if I can see and venerate that beautiful Icon.

I would like the street address for the Ukrainian college which is supposed to be near Vatican City in Rome. I believe it is called St. Clement's. Does anyone have it, or know where I can get it on the web?
