Today is the black anniversary of the fall of Constantinople in May 29 1453. I cannot say anything more on that.

Yes, it is also "Restoration Day" when the Monarchy of Britain was restored with the return of King Charles II . . .

As for the Fall of Constantinople, the grave of the last ancestor of the Constantinian line is on the island of Barbados in the churchyard of the parish church of St John.

I visited it and knelt near the grave - I knelt for a while since all our colleagues on tour with us wanted to take a picture of me there . . .

I'm listening to "Lament For The Fall Of Constantinople" by Cappella Romana.

Kyrie eleison - through the prayers of all of the saints and martyrs of Constantinople O Lord save us. Holy Martyr Constantine Paleologus, pray to God for us.

Alex,

My husband and I also came across this (quite by accident and to our great surprise) on a visit to Barbados!

I didn't know about that. I searched a little and the only thing that I could find was that the Churchyard contains body of Ferdinand Paleologus (descendant of Constantine). I don't know anything about his story. Constantine Paleologus was killed during his defence at the Fall of Constantinople. His body was not found.

Apprently serious scholars do not consider the claims of a few to be decendents of the ruling branch of the Imperial family in the West indies and in Cornwall in England to be genuine. It is interesting to see how far and wide the DNA of this family is spread in various royal families. I did not know that the Emperor's brother Thomas sold the imperial throne to the King of France while he was in exile in Venice.

Dear Houfou,

I stand corrected my Greek brother. The only thing I know for sure is that he was a Paleologos.

In Christ,

Dear Friends,

It reminds me of a movie about the Kozaks I once saw.

A Turkish diplomat came riding into their camp on horseback.

The Kozaks stopped to see what he would say.

"I am the ambassador of the Sultan of Constantinople . . ." he began.

And the Kozak Otaman interrupted him by saying, "We know what you are, you Turkish bastard!" wink

And there is the colourful picture of the Kozaks writing a response to the Sultan's letter to them, asking them to stop attacking his ships . . .

When I began teaching in Ukrainian school, I received a book that contained the text of the Kozaks' reply to the Sultan . . .

Most of it I cannot reprint here for fear of incurring the Administrator's righteous wrath! smile

But in response to the Sultan's self-proclaimed warrior status, the Kozaks said, "And what kind of 'warrior' are you, since you cannot even kill a porcupine with your naked backside?"

That phrase became popular in Ukrainian slang and is so to this day . . .

Just a point of information.
