Hi all, I’m relocating my family to the Columbus, OH area from California. We know absolutely no one there and nothing really about the area. I’ve made a couple of brief trips out there for work, but I’m mostly curious if anyone is involved with St John Chrysostom church and can tell me what kind of community (how healthy/active) it is. We’re going to be leaning HEAVILY on the church to help make connections when we arrive. My wife and I are late-30s with 5 young kids (9, 6, 4, 2, 3mo). What’s the parish make up?

Glory to Jesus Christ! Wish I could help my brother, I'm not in that area. But know that I'm praying for you and your family.

Thanks for your prayers. We need them. The move is schedule for 22 days from now and we’re still looking for a place to land when we get there. Also, I’m going back and forth between excitement and terror about the whole thing. I’m blowing up a decent career with decent pay to take a step back and start over with a new company for a lifestyle upgrade for me and my family and it’s nerve-racking, to say the least. Anybody else have any advice generally about doing this sort of thing?

Anybody else have any advice generally about doing this sort of thing? I did something sort of similar, but I was younger (late twenties), had one child at the time, and was moving near family. But we did have to rebuild most of our social network and learn to live on less money. I'm not sure I have any advice aside from what you already know: start meeting people ASAP. If you don't have community at your parish (yet!), you can probably find some group of people nearby who at least share the same values. For example, my wife was able to find a mom's group at a local Roman Catholic parish full of some very wonderful families.
