CAN - Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, who served as head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church from 2004 until his retirement in 2011, strongly criticized parliamentary opposition to the passage of the Hague Adoption Convention, an agreement that governs international adoptions.

“I would take a whip and give them all a good beating, then maybe they would start to think straight,” said Cardinal Husar, according to a report by the Religious Information Service of Ukraine. “Adoption is a very good outcome, because there are people who are really willing to accept the child as their own.”

“Even though the child will grow outside its normal national environment, the child will have everything needed for normal development: care, schools, preparation for mature life,” he added.
