CWN - In a brief interview with L’Osservatore Romano, the president of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People outlined the dimensions of the humanitarian crisis in Syria.
“The situation in Syria appears especially disastrous and every day that passes it grows nothing but worse, with profound humanitarian consequences,” said Cardinal Antonio Maria Vegliò. “In the last six months the number of refugees has doubled from one to two million persons.”
Half of these refugees are children, so “there is the risk that an entire generation of children will be lost.”
“A third of the population [still in Syria], seven million people, need humanitarian assistance,” he continued. “More than 110,000 have been killed.”
