CWN - A Greek Orthodox bishop has issued a plea to lawmakers to oppose a bid for legal recognition of same-sex unions.

"I beseech you from the heart not to proceed," Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus wrote. "You will deny yourself the blessing of the most just Lord whose help and protection we daily need as much personally as nationally.”

Several news outlets reported that Metropolitan Seraphim had threatened to excommunicate lawmakers who voted in favor of same-sex unions, but not outlet quoted any passage from the prelate’s letter making that threat.
