Moscow patriarch compares Ukrainian protests to Russian Revolution

CWN - The head of the Russian Orthodox Church has compared the Euromaidan protest in Ukraine, which led to the resignation of a pro-Russian government, to the Russian Revolution of 1917, which led to the overthrow of the czar and the institution of a Communist regime.

“The latest events in Ukraine, terrible pictures of the revolutionary uprising in the capital, people killed, distraught spiritually and consciously-- all this helps us to understand what happened in Russia back then,” said Patriarch Kirill I of Moscow, according to a report from the Interfax news agency.

“Today, during this life-changing time for our homeland, we prayed in the Kremlin about the Russian state and entire historical Rus', so that God will keep us under the protection of Holy Mother of God and never allow wars between us, so that a brother won't go against his brother and so that gradually the spiritual strength of Rus' will accumulate-- the very strength which led to the establishment of the great state,” he added.
