CWN - A leading Russian Orthodox official has told a Moscow radio station that the materialist model of development proposed by “Western elites” is in decline, according to an Interfax news agency report.
“I am sure that Western elites have lost the intellectual dispute,” said Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, chairman of the Synodal Department for the Cooperation of Church and Society of the Moscow Patriarchate. “Yes, they still have more weapons and more money than other parts of the world, but they can’t answer anything to the question about the limit of growth. On the question about foundations of unfair powerful and economic dominan[ce], they’ve already lost the intellectual dispute.”
While the archpriest said he is not certain what will replace the materialist model, he stated that “I hope that at least we will be able to tell people quietly and calmly: you shouldn't live for material welfare, for egoistic desires, for preserving health, only for this earthily life, but to live, even at the level of social organization, for God’s truth. I hope that people will understand it more and more.”
