CWN - The secretary-general of the synod of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church has welcomed the election of Petro Poroshenko as the nation’s president.

“The new president is a practicing Orthodox Christian, who’s sympathetic to other churches and ready to organize national life in a new way,” said Bishop Bogdan Dziurach, according to a report by journalist Jonathan Luxmoore.

“The previous rulers supported one denomination, for their own interests,” the prelate added. “If a new government ensures freedom of speech and religion, listens to the nation and satisfies popular yearnings, it will meet democratic criteria.”
