CWN - Praying for “peace in our country, a victory over our enemies, and the strength of a fraternal union,” the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church has blessed a monument to the “Heavenly Hundred”-- protestors slain by Ukraine’s former pro-Russian regime during the Euromaidan protests.
The protests, which began in November, culminated in the February 2014 Ukrainian revolution in which pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych was ousted. Russia countered by annexing Crimea, and the War in Donbass, between pro-Russian separatists and the new Ukrainian government, began in eastern Ukraine.
“The Heavenly Hundred through their death became victorious,” said Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk. “Our young people, students, who gave up their lives, in this act of self-sacrifice overcame the enemy.”
