CWN - A United Nations commission has documented human rights violations perpetrated in Syria by the Islamic State of Syria and the Levant .
The Sunni jihadist group, also known as ISIS, now controls approximately one-third of Syria and Iraq.
“Executions in public spaces have become a common spectacle on Fridays in Ar Raqqah and ISIS-controlled areas of Aleppo governorate,” stated the commission’s report, which was dated August 13 and released August 27.
“In some cases, ISIS forces passers-by to attend,” the report continued. “Before executions, ISIS fighters announce the victims’ crimes. Bodies are placed on public display, often on crucifixes, for up to three days, serving as a warning to local residents.”
“Public squares have become the scene of amputations, lashings, and mock crucifixion,” continued the report, which also condemned human rights abuses by the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
