LORENZAGO DI CADORE, Italy, JULY 23, 2007 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI had lunch with Chinese Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-Kiun, who gave the Pope first-hand news on the reception of his recent papal letter to Chinese Catholics.

The archbishop of Hong Kong met with the Pope in Lorenzago di Cadore on Sunday, where the Holy Father is vacationing. The cardinal was accompanied by numerous pilgrims from Hong Kong who were present for the praying of the midday Angelus.

The prelate returned to Hong Kong on Sunday.

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone recently spoke of China, saying that the Holy See appreciated the choice for the new bishop of Beijing, and hoped that the official Church would seek Vatican approval for the selection.

Forty-three-year-old Monsignor Joseph Li Shan was elected by the community of the Beijing Diocese to fill the See left vacant by the death of Archbishop Michele Fu Tieshan.
