Sibiu, Romania – On 5 September 2007, the Third European Ecumenical Assembly in the city of Sibiu launched work activities with thematic sessions and mini-conferences including “Perspectives on Ecumenism in Ukrainian” organized by the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) with the participation of representatives from Germany, Romania, Belarus and Russia, including the delegation of the Moscow Patriarchy. ugcc.org.ua covered the story on 3 September 2007.

In his commentary for the RISU Ukrainian-language homepage, Ihor Shaban, head of the UGCC Committee promoting unity among Christians, stated, “Despite certain discrepancies in doctrinal matters, representatives of the Moscow Patriarchy first of all attempted to highlight commonalities with the UGCC, such as education and social work.” Also, he added: “It is a real pleasure that representatives of the once united Kyivan Church can freely and fruitfully discuss various church issues, working toward common perspectives and mutual agreement on the future of Ukrainian Christianity.”

The UGCC delegation is headed by Bishop Hlib (Lonchyna), curial auxiliary bishop of the UGCC.
