CWN - A study by an English defense consultancy firm has found that nearly half of Syrian rebels are “jihadists” or “hardline Islamists,” The Telegraph reported.
“The insurgency is now dominated by groups which have at least an Islamist viewpoint on the conflict,” said the study’s author. “The idea that it is mostly secular groups leading the opposition is just not borne out.”
According to the study, 10% of the Syrian rebel fighters are “jihadists,” 30,000 or 35,000 are “hardline Islamists,” and 30,000 are “moderates belonging to groups that have an Islamic character.”
