CWN - Since 2011, Catholic relief agencies have supplied $72 million to support efforts to help refugees in Syria, the Pontifical Council Cor Unum has announced.

Dozens of Catholic agencies are working in Syria and neighboring countries—Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, Egypt, and Cyprus—to bring aid to the refugees, Cor Unum said. In order to coordinate relief efforts, and overcome difficulties in obtaining timely information about the needs of refugees, the pontifical council brought together representatives of the relief agencies for a meeting in June. A Beirut-based agency, Caritas Middle East-North Africa, now has been designated as a clearinghouse for relief plans.
